Hydration in Motherhood: The Most Overlooked Essential

It’s one of the simplest things — and one of the easiest to forget.
During pregnancy, your body needs more water to form amniotic fluid, support digestion, regulate temperature, and deliver essential nutrients to your baby.
After birth, especially while breastfeeding, hydration remains just as important. Breast milk is around 90% water, and staying hydrated is essential for milk production, energy levels, and recovery.
And yet, many mums find themselves constantly dehydrated — not because they don’t know better, but because the mental and physical demands of motherhood are relentless.
Hydration doesn’t just support your body — it supports your capacity to care, recover, and feel like yourself.
💧 A few practical reminders:
Keep water accessible in every room — including by the bed and feeding chair.
Don’t wait until you’re thirsty. Drink small amounts consistently.
Herbal teas, soups, fruit and vegetables with high water content all count too.
Ask your partner or visitors to bring you a glass of water, just like they'd bring tea.
Use feeding time as a hydration reminder — when baby drinks, so do you.
At MommaBox, we remind mums regularly in our materials and checklists that hydration is not optional. It’s essential self-care.
To every mum reading this: you’re doing an incredible job. Keep drinking water. Keep looking after you.
